Measuring For A Mantel
Step 1: Take the following measurements:
 

K. - Width of the facing material = Opening width of mantel (B)
L. - Height of your facing material = Opening height of mantel (C)
M. - Return depth of your facing material = Return depth of mantel (G)

Step 2: Use measurements from Step 1 to select your mantel size
 

Opening Width (B) should be equal to or less than your (K) measurement. If it is less than please keep in mind that you should have a bare minimun of 6 inches of facing material between the firebox opening and the inside of the mantel leg. Also, pay attention to the body width measurement (D) to make sure to total width of the mantel will work for your application.


Opening Height (C) should be equal to or less than your (K) measurement. If it is less than please keep in mind that you should have a bare minimun of 6 inches of facing material between the firebox opening and the bottom of the breast portion of the mantel. Also, pay attention to the Overall Height measurement (E) to make sure to total height of the mantel will work for your application.


Return depth (G) should equal your (M) measurement + 1/4 inch.
For example, if your facing material depth is 3/4" you would order a 1" return depth. This should allow adequate clearance for uneven facings. If your facing is stone you may need to allow even more room for the return depth.

Scribe molding is sent along with your mantel to "finish off" the area where the interior legs and bottom breast board meets your facing material.

Step 3: Checklist
 
Once you have selected your mantel size, double check these following items:
 
1.) Make sure that the mantel is not too wide that it touches an existing wall, window or door. Mantel shelf width (A) divided by 2 must be less than the width from the center of the fireplace to any obstruction (wall, window, door, built-in shelves, etc).
 
2.) Make sure the mantel is not too wide that the legs do not sit on the existing hearth. The legs should sit on the hearth. Mantel body width (D) must be less than the width of the hearth. Or, in the event that the facing material and hearth are the same width the legs can sit off the hearth on the floor (note, special consideration will need to be taken if the hearth is raised).
